Our Story

The history of Beth Israel Congregation begins in the 1920s, a time when young Jewish families were moving into the area around Fairview slopes, in the Oak Street area.

Beth Israel itself was born in 1932, a year of anxiety over the Depression. Thus it was a courageous act to contemplate forming a new congregation. That’s chutzpah!

Selling Your Hametz

A Passover Message from Rabbi Jonathan Infeld

Please consider making a donation to Jewish Family Services for their Ma’ot Chittim cam-paign in order to insure that the entire Jewish community of the Lower Mainland will have food to eat this coming Passover. Please make payments directly to the JFS or make cheques payable to Jewish Family Services.
If possible, all Hametz – goods not acceptable during Passover, and materials containing such unacceptable food – should be destroyed or given away before the holiday begins. Should this be impossible or cause financial strain, the hametz may be stored in such a way that you are sure not to use it during the holiday and its actual ownership is transferred to a non-Jew until the holiday ends.  In order to fulfill the Jewish precept of not owning any hametz during Passover, please fill out the form below and mail or bring it to Rabbi Infeld at the BI office no later than noon on March 30, 2018. You can also email to info@bethisrael.ca or fax to 604.731.4989.
Please complete the form and return to Beth Israel no later than noon on March 30, 2018.
